Celebrating the Heart of Our Homes: A Special Mother’s Day Tribute

Every year, on the second Sunday of May, families across South Africa and around the world take a moment to pause, reflect and celebrate one of the most important people in our lives — our mothers.

Mother’s Day is more than just flowers, cards and breakfast in bed. It’s a heartfelt reminder of the love, care and endless sacrifices that mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and mother figures make every single day. At its core, this day is about gratitude — a chance to say "thank you" for everything they do, often without expecting anything in return.

From tying shoelaces and packing lunchboxes, to late-night homework sessions and comforting hugs after a long day — mothers are often the quiet heroes in the background of our lives. They cheer us on from the sidelines, offer guidance when we feel lost, and give us strength even when they’re tired themselves.

In our school community, we see this devotion daily. Mothers who walk long distances to attend meetings, who make sure uniforms are clean and books are covered. Mothers who remind us to be kind, to work hard, and to never give up. These acts may seem small, but they are the threads that hold families together and inspire learners to be their very best.

It’s also important to remember that a mother doesn’t always mean someone who gave birth to you. Many scholars are raised by grandmothers, older sisters, aunts, guardians or community members who step in with love and care. This day is for them too — for every person who has played the role of a mother with strength and grace. In the spirit of creativity and heartfelt expression, one of our talented learners, Ngcebo Shezi, has penned a beautiful poem that captures deep emotion and thought. It speaks of joy, reflection, hope, and healing - a shining example of how our young voices use the power of words to make sense of the world around them. We are proud to share this poem with our school community — a reminder that within each of our learners lies a unique story waiting to be told.

We also hosted a special Mother’s Day Tea in honour of the incredible women who nurture and support our learners every day. Our educators were treated to beautifully decorated tables, warm cups of tea and delicious treats. It was a morning filled with laughter, gratitude and love — a small but meaningful way to say thank you to the mothers and mother figures who do so much for our schooling family.
