Learning Beyond the Classroom: Heather Learners Explore Marine Life and Conservation
10/1/2025

Heather Secondary School’s Grade 10 and 11 learners recently embarked on an unforgettable educational excursion that blended learning, adventure, and fun. The day kicked off with a visit to the KZN Sharks Board, where students had the rare opportunity to witness a live shark dissection. This hands-on experience offered fascinating insights into marine biology, shark anatomy, and conservation, leaving learners captivated by the wonders of ocean life and the importance of protecting it.
After an eye-opening morning, learners enjoyed a relaxing lunch at uShaka Marine World, surrounded by the vibrant marine atmosphere of Durban’s coastline. The adventure continued at the WESSA Treasure Beach Environmental Centre, where students took part in engaging games focused on pollution and sustainability. A guided beach walk provided the perfect setting for exploring how marine organisms adapt to their environments and how ecosystems are impacted by human activity.
The excursion was more than just a day out — it was a journey of discovery and connection. Learners returned with a deeper appreciation for the environment, a better understanding of conservation, and memories to last a lifetime. The experience also strengthened friendships and encouraged teamwork, embodying Heather Secondary’s commitment to learning that inspires curiosity, responsibility, and respect for the natural world.
