True Life NGO presents GBV Awareness Workshop for Grade 8 Learners
2/3/2025

On 3 February 2025, Heather Secondary School had the privilege of hosting True Life, a renowned NGO from Kloof, for an insightful Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness workshop aimed at educating our Grade 8 learners on this critical issue.
The session provided crucial insights into the realities of GBV, helping learners understand its different forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and digital abuse. The facilitators discussed the warning signs of abusive behaviour, emphasising that GBV can occur in schools, homes, and communities. The workshop also explored the impact of societal norms and stereotypes in perpetuating gender-based violence, challenging learners to rethink harmful beliefs and attitudes.
A key focus was on prevention and intervention, empowering learners to speak up and seek help when they or someone they know experiences abuse. True Life highlighted available support structures, including counselling services, helplines, and community organisations that provide assistance to victims of GBV.
Through interactive discussions, real-life scenarios, and role-playing exercises, learners were encouraged to reflect on the importance of respect, consent, and personal boundaries. The session reinforced that everyone has a role to play in preventing GBV and creating a safer society.
Our Deputy Principal, Mr L Govender extended our sincere gratitude to True Life for their dedication to raising awareness and equipping our learners with the knowledge and confidence to stand against GBV. Heather Secondary remains committed to fostering a culture of respect, safety, and empowerment for all our stakeholders.
