Farewell Suvash!

7/17/2024

On 17 July 2024, with a heavy heart that we informed the Heather Secondary School community of the passing of our SGB Deputy Chairperson, Suvash Singh. May his dear soul rest in peace. Suvash was our deputy Head Boy in 1993, his matriculation year, and remained vested in Pietermaritzburg and our Heather community. He is a star whose light has gone too soon.

Mr Reddy shared his sentiments, as reflected below, during the funeral:

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls

As we gather today to say our farewell to Suvash Singh, a man who has left an indelible mark on Heather Secondary School and our broader community, I wanted to share a few thoughts on the impact this young soul had on our lives. Suvash's journey with our school began long before his esteemed recent roles as Vice Chairman of our SGB or his role as Acting Director at the PGiTO Office of the Premier. His roots with us run deep. I remember vividly the young Suvash, a swift and determined athlete, who was often seen blazing down the track. His speed was unmatched - in his own words, he was ‘ a bullet’ … but it wasn't just his athletic prowess that set him apart - it was his determination to make a difference, to contribute.

In 1993, Suvash served as the deputy head prefect, a role he carried out with unwavering dedication and integrity. He was always willing to lend a hand, whether it was assisting his fellow learners with their studies, organising events, or simply being a listening ear. His helpfulness knew no bounds, and he had a remarkable ability to inspire those around him to strive for excellence. Last year, the matric class of 1993 celebrated their 30 year reunion. Suvash was instrumental in the build up to their celebration, despite his hectic work schedule, and he continued to be a figure of prominence in that event. His ability to remember, with fine grain precision, the activities of over 3 decades ago was astounding - whether it was his recall of their excursion to the Umgeni Nature Reserve or Aadil’s story about printers and the power of lies. His amazing gifts made him socially connected beyond belief.

As an adult, the bullet remained - running a 21km race in 1:40 is no minor accomplishment! Suvash’s commitment to education and community service only deepened. His contributions to Heather Secondary School as Vice Chairman of the SGB have been invaluable. He played a pivotal role in shaping our policies, always advocating for the best interests of our learners and staff. His vision and dedication helped us navigate numerous challenges and achieve significant milestones. Suvash's legacy is not only in his accomplishments but also in the countless lives he touched. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering support have left an enduring impact on our school and our hearts. He was more than a colleague; he was a friend, a mentor, and a guiding light for many of us.

Today, as we bid farewell to Suvash, I remember the lessons he taught us: to lead with kindness, to act with integrity, and to always strive for excellence. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us in all that we do.

To Sarika and the kids, and Suvash's broader family, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We share in your grief and offer our deepest condolences. Suvash will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
