On Target: Bastian Govender’s Rise in Darts

4/20/2026

Bastian Govender is a 13-year-old Grade 8 learner at Heather Secondary School with a passion that sets him apart from most teenagers his age — darts. From the moment he picks up a dart, his focus sharpens, his patience steadies, and his natural hand–eye coordination takes over. These qualities don't just make him a good player; they make him a formidable one.

What truly distinguishes Bastian is his willingness to compete well beyond his comfort zone. He regularly holds his own in leagues and tournaments alongside players aged 18 and older — a testament not only to his skill, but to his confidence and maturity on the oche. That dedication has paid off in a big way: Bastian has earned his KZN colours, a remarkable achievement for any player, let alone one still navigating his early teens.

His growing reputation hasn't gone unnoticed. Bastian was recently featured in the Public Eye Newspaper, a nod to the buzz he's generating in the local darts community.

On 18 April 2026, Bastian travelled to Margate to take part in a selection event aimed at identifying top women in the over-20 category for an upcoming competition in Cape Town. There, he stepped into a supporting role — motivating players and assisting with scorekeeping — showing that his contribution to the sport extends far beyond throwing darts.

For Bastian, darts is about more than points and podiums. The travel, the new faces, and the shared love of the game have enriched his journey in ways that go well beyond sport. His involvement has quietly but powerfully shaped his confidence, sharpened his focus, and broadened his social world — one triple 20 at a time.
