Year in Review : Charity initiatives 2025
1/9/2026

Channel for Change is a group of Heather Secondary learners who have come together to support each other while raising awareness for important causes. During this year, learners raised cancer awareness, collected food for the SPCA, collected sanitary care for girls and sponsored groceries for hampers.
As part of our school’s SPCA food drive, I had the opportunity to play an active role in organising and collecting donations to support animals in need. Our team worked together to set up collection stations around the school and encouraged learners to contribute pet food and supplies. We also visited the local SPCA, where we personally delivered all the collected items and learned about the shelter’s daily challenges.
One of the most heartwarming experiences was seeing the genuine gratitude from the SPCA staff and volunteers, as well as the joy of the animals when we arrived with food and treats. It was a powerful reminder that teamwork and compassion can bring real change. I’m incredibly proud of my team for their commitment and kindness, and I wish them all the best as they continue to make a difference in future community projects.

The cancer awareness fundraiser was inspired by the many individuals who are fighting cancer, those we have lost, and those who have triumphed in their battle.
This event brought us closer and allowed us to learn new things about one another. It showed us that we can make a difference in the world, no matter where we start. As we go our separate ways in the future, we hope to host many more fundraisers. Channel for Change will always remain a connection between us.
To everyone who helped make this possible, I am so proud of what we’ve achieved together. I hope your passion and commitment to making the world a better place are recognised wherever life takes you.

Being part of the fundraising team has been a truly meaningful experience. Each month, I contributed sugar to the donation hampers we prepared for families in need. Knowing that these hampers brought comfort and relief to others filled my heart with gratitude and purpose.
Through this journey, I learned how powerful small acts of kindness can be when done with love and unity. I’m so thankful to have been part of such a caring and dedicated team, and I wish everyone continued compassion and success as they carry forward the beautiful spirit of giving.

Arabella Mohammed started Project Sanitary Care in 2024 to provide menstrual hygiene products to girls and women who lack access. She collected 430 packs (4,166 pads) and distributed them to schools and community organisations, including installing two dispensers at Heather Secondary for ongoing access.
She has also volunteered with Msunduzi Cancer Hospice (Grades 10–12) and the Mountain Rise Community Police Forum (Grades 11–12), supporting peers and contributing to community projects. These experiences have proven that small actions can make a big difference.
