Eco Club

Leading the Eco-club has inspired me to advocate for what I know is right. Through the support and dedication of Ms K. Naick, Mr A.D. Stoffels and Mr S.Reddy, the Eco-club has ignited a passion for environmental consciousness within learners across the school campus. We have proven that collaboratively we can make a difference in our community through clean-up campaigns and meetings filled with innovation. Watching learners show up to clean and break free of mindsets such as “not my trash, not my problem” has been the highlight of leading the eco-club, as we firmly advocated for our motto: “Eco-not-ego”.

To my fellow peers: Most of you have embarked on this journey from the beginning, setting up our mission brick-by-brick. I am incredibly proud of how far you have come, and I hope that you will continue to be the voice of the planet in the real world. You hold the power of transformation and carry a capacity for change, never silence that tiny voice that whispers “Eco-not-ego”. With all my love, good luck out there!

Reading Club

Being part of the Reading Club from Grade 11A to 12A was a truly enriching experience. Every Thursday, we met in Mrs. Z. Hussain’s classroom to prepare reading materials, which were then placed in the office cubicles for teachers to use during Friday’s registration. Under Mrs Hussain’s guidance, we learned teamwork, responsibility, and initiative.

One of the highlights was helping select articles, knowing our contributions encouraged reading across the school.

To my fellow Reading Club members, thank you for your dedication and shared passion. “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” ~ George R.R. Martin.- Arabella Mohammed

Debating

My love for debating began in Grade 10, when Mrs. Chengan trained me for Model United Nations, earning an Exceptional Delegate certificate. In Grades 11 and 12, Dr Maniraj supported and encouraged me as I founded the Heather Secondary Debate Club in Grade 11.

I have competed in the Umgeni Debating League for two years, coached by ex-pupil Leyton Chetty. In 2024, our team reached the semi-finals, with my team placing first runners-up, and I was ranked 5th best senior speaker. That same year, I also competed in the UKZN Debating Championship alongside college and high school teams.

In 2025, my team made history by winning 10/10 rounds and claiming the UDL Senior Finals, while I was selected for the UDL Senior Provincial Squad, ranking 6th best senior speaker. I also represented Ukraine at the Model United Nations Conference 2025, where my team earned the 1st Best Delegation Award, and another Heather team won the Most Outstanding Delegation Award.

Debating has broadened my knowledge in areas such as ethics, feminism, medicine, AI, international relations, and South African politics. With only an hour to prepare and no cell phones allowed, every round tested our teamwork, creativity, and resilience. Debating isn’t just about trophies; it’s about courage, growth, and the lessons we carry forward.
